“Space exploration captures the public’s imagination, and collaboration between science and storytelling brings that sense of discovery to a wider audience,” said Will Boyington, associate administrator for the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Inspiring the next generation, whether through rocket launches or sci-fi movies, helps build the talent and support that underpin American leadership in space.”

NASA’s communications personnel provided informal consultation about human spaceflight and science during the making of the movie, and experts from the agency in astrobiology and astrophysics answered questions about these topics during filming. Agency advisors are listed in the credits.

On the movie set, NASA facilitated an in-person consultation between astronaut Kjell Lindgren and actor Ryan Gosling, who plays an astronaut in the film. The agency also provided brand use guidance and clearance for its logos featured in the film.

NASA’s activities related to the movie even reached beyond Earth. In between conducting research and demonstrating new technologies, Expedition 74 crew members living and working aboard the International Space Station screened “Project Hail Mary” while in orbit.

This convergence of real-life space exploration and science fiction is not unique to "Project Hail Mary." NASA has a long history of collaborating with filmmakers to ensure accuracy and authenticity in their depictions of space travel and exploration. This partnership benefits both the agency and the film industry, as it allows for a more informed and engaging portrayal of space-related topics.

In related news, NASA is set to launch its Northrop Grumman Commercial Resupply Services 24 (CRS-24) mission in April, which will deliver science investigations, supplies, and equipment to the International Space Station. The agency has also announced the launch of NASA Force, a dedicated talent track within the US Tech Force initiative designed to recruit and deploy top engineers and technologists to support America’s space program.

These initiatives demonstrate NASA's commitment to advancing its mission through innovative partnerships and collaborations. As the agency continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, it will be interesting to see how science fiction films like "Project Hail Mary" inspire new generations to pursue careers in STEM fields and contribute to the nation's leadership in space.
